COD - World At War

Okay..yesterday my 2 sons combined their Christmas money and bought the Call Of Duty.
Once loaded the latest patch was installed (from the NAG DVD).
When you try and run the game it does not start up...NO error messages. The games starts (logo comes up)...the font on the PC becomes huge...then it disappears and everything is normal again on the PC (font).

I checked forums and the technical help that came with the game it suggested updating graphic drivers....direct x....latest audio drivers. I have done all that and it will still not work.

PC Specs

Pentium 4 2.8
1GB Ram
512mb Radeon x1650 graphics Card

The PC plays COD4, BF2, BF2142 all fine...no issues. It even plays the Command and Conquer Red Alert 3 demo 100%.

The PC specs as per the game:

Pentium 4 3.0
512mb Ram
Radeon 1600XT (256mb)

It plays fine (well sort of with everything turned down) on my work laptop (Dell D630).

Any suggestions?
